Novak Djokovic names Andy Murray as Coach for 2025 season

After parting ways with his former coach Goran Ivanišević earlier this year, Novak Djokovic has announced that his old rival and multi-Grand Slam winner, Andy Murray, will join his coaching team to prepare for the 2025 Australian Open.

In a statement, Djokovic said, “I am thrilled to have one of my toughest rivals on the same side of the net, this time as a coach.” “I am looking forward to starting the season with Andy in Melbourne where we have had so many unforgettable moments together for our careers.”

The three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray is looking forward to working with the 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic. Scottish-born Tennis Maestro, Murray, who announced his retirement in August from a successful playing career, echoed the sentiment of excitement. “I’m so happy with this chance and I can’t wait to now be pulling for the same cause.” “It is an honour to offer my help to Novak in his aims for the next season.”

The two players have been competing against each other for a long time, with 36 head-to-head matches, including 19 finals and seven Grand Slam matches. Djokovic has gotten the upper hand over their rivalry, with 25 wins to Murray’s 11, while Murray tastes ultimate victory against Djokovic in the 2012 US Open final and the 2013 Wimbledon final.

In a light-hearted video uploaded to social media, Djokovic made a quip on Murray’s unwillingness to retire saying “He never liked retirement anyway.”

Although Djokovic had a challenging 2024, failing to win a single Grand Slam, he is determined to keep his dream of a historic 25th Slam title alive. One major highlight for him this year was winning his first Olympic singles gold in Paris. With Murray now by his side, the world number 7 looks forward to the new season with renewed aspirations.

The decision to hire Murray came after Djokovic and Goran Ivanišević split in March. The two had enjoyed success, with Ivanišević guiding Djokovic to 12 Grand Slam titles. According to Djokovic, the six months without a coach and the history shared between the two made him go for Murray, who knows his game very well.

“We played each other since we were boys — 25 years of rivalry and pushing each other beyond our limits,” said Djokovic. “It is time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner.”

Now, as they train for their first season together, Djokovic and Murray are well-equipped to pen the final chapter in their legendary story — this time around, as partners, not rivals.
