The BGT 2024-25 series between India vs Australia starts on November 22 in Perth. Dive into series stats, the WTC 2025 qualification race, India’s 18-member squad, and how to watch it live in India.
The 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to commence with the first test on November 22, 2024, at Optus Stadium in Perth, Australia, marking the return of the five-match series format for the first time since the 1992 series. Since then, the contest has been played over four matches in each of the previous editions, including the most recent series in 2023, which India won 2-1 at home.
India will travel to Australia following a 0-3 series defeat to New Zealand, their first-ever whitewash at home since 2000. This has put a heavy dent on India’s qualification hopes for the 2023-25 World Test Championship final. Meanwhile, Australia will be aiming to avenge their recent losses to India in the last two BGT series (2018-19 and 2020-21) at home and would like to cement their position at the top of the WTC points table. Both teams have much at stake in this series, with crucial points on the line for direct qualification to the WTC 2025 final.
This article covers everything you need to know about the BGT 2024-25 series, including squad details, schedule, Top player stats, WTC final qualification scenarios for India and Australia and where to watch it live.

Recent Five Border-Gavaskar Series Results
Australia vs India has become one of the most intensely contested rivalries in Test cricket over the past few years. Here’s a brief overview of the results from the last five series:
- 2022-23 (India in Australia) – India won 2-1
- 2020-21 (Australia in India) – India won 2-1
- 2017-18 (India in Australia) – India won 2-1
- 2016-17 (Australia in India) – India won 2-1
- 2014-15 (India in Australia) – Australia won 2-0
India has been dominant in recent years, winning four of the last five BGT series. Australia, however, remains a formidable opponent, especially on their home soil.
WTC 2025 Qualification Scenarios
Australia’s Qualification Chances
As of now, Australia is at the top of the standings and in pole position to qualify for the WTC final but must remain consistent. Australia has seven test matches remaining, including five matches against India at home and an away two-match series against Sri Lanka next year. To qualify on their own terms, Australia needs to win at least 4 out of these 7 matches. This will allow them to control their fate without relying on the outcomes of other teams’ matches.
India’s Qualification Chances
India’s qualification scenario is critical. To stay in the race for the WTC ’25 final, they must win at least 4 matches out of their remaining 5 matches in this current cycle, which are all against the Aussies. If they fail to win 4 out of 5 matches, India will have to rely on the results of other teams—like South Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, to secure a place in the final.
WTC 2025 Points Table
As it stands, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa are vying for spots in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025. Only the top two teams in the WTC points table will compete in the final at Lord’s on June 11, 2025. The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series will significantly impact the standings.
England currently sits in 6th place with a 40% win rate. They have a three-match series against New Zealand lined up, but their chances of qualifying for the final appear slim.
