Claudio Ranieri has come out of retirement to assume the role of AS Roma’s manager for the third time, also serving as the Technical Director until the end of the 2024/25 season, and will transition into a senior advisory role in the management group after this season.
Seria A 2024-25: Claudio Ranieri Appointed Roma’s Manager
Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as Roma’s head coach until the end of the 2024-2025 season, marking his third stint at the helm of his hometown club. The 73-year-old Italian has come out of retirement after stepping down from his role at Cagliari in May. His return to Roma comes following the dismissal of Ivan Juric, who was sacked after Roma’s 3-2 home defeat against Bologna on Sunday, which left the team in 12th place in Serie A.
Juric had been in charge of Roma for only a brief period. His tenure saw a series of underwhelming results, and the loss to Bologna ultimately sealed his fate. Roma struggled for consistency under his leadership, and Juric became the second coach to be dismissed by the club this season. In September, Daniele De Rossi was also sacked after a string of poor performances. Despite the club’s investments during the summer transfer window, Roma failed to gel as a team, prompting the need for a change in direction.
Roma confirmed the appointment of Ranieri on Thursday. He will coach the team for the remainder of the season and serve as the Technical Director of the First Team. After the season ends, Ranieri will transition into a senior management role as an advisor on sporting matters for Roma’s owners, where he will play a key part in shaping the club’s future direction.
His extensive experience in managing some of the top clubs in Europe, coupled with his in-depth knowledge of Serie A, will prove to be invaluable in this role. As he collaborates closely with the club’s owners, he will play a crucial part in strategizing and shaping the future trajectory of the team. This partnership will involve assessing player performance, refining tactics, and setting long-term objectives that align with the club’s vision, ensuring that every decision is made with both immediate success and sustainable growth in mind.

Ranieri has managed several top European clubs, including Chelsea, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, and Monaco, but he is most famous for leading Leicester City to an improbable Premier League title in 2016. This will be his third time at the helm of Roma. In his previous two stints, he guided the club to a near Serie A title in the 2010-2011 season. His deep connection with the club and his vast managerial experience makes him an ideal candidate to help steer Roma through this challenging period.
AS Roma is currently in a mid-table position in the Serie A 2024-25 points table, presenting a tough road ahead for the Italian Manager. The squad, while talented, has yet to show the consistency needed to push for a top-four finish. Ranieri’s appointment aims to stabilise the team, improve performances, and push for European qualification. His leadership will be crucial as Roma prepares for a difficult run of fixtures, starting with an away match against the table topper Napoli on November 24.
