Key Highlights from the IPL 2025 Retention Round

  1. KKR and RR Retentions: Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals retained all six players, leaving them without any RTM cards. Notably, KKR released their former captain Shreyas Iyer, who led them to a championship-winning campaign in 2024, while RR chose not to retain two standout performers, Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal.
  2. Captains not retained: A total of five teams have opted to release their captains: Royal Challengers Bangalore (Faf du Plessis), Kolkata Knight Riders (Shreyas Iyer), Delhi Capitals (Rishabh Pant), Lucknow Super Giants (KL Rahul), and Punjab Kings (Shikhar Dhawan & Sam Curran).
  3. Punjab Kings retained two uncapped players: Punjab Kings adopted a distinctive strategy by retaining only two uncapped players—Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh—allowing them four RTM options for capped players at the auction. In contrast, Mumbai Indians retained five capped players without any uncapped players.
  4. Mumbai Indians’ Captaincy Decision: Hardik Pandya will continue to lead the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2025, despite the retention of star players like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, both of whom are also leading the Indian national team.
  5. MS Dhoni’s retained as uncapped player: MS Dhoni was retained as an uncapped player by Chennai Super Kings for ₹4 crore. Given his last international appearance was over five years ago, he qualifies as uncapped under the new rules.
