Shami set to comeback for Bengal in Ranji Trophy 2024-25 against MP

Ace Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is finally set to make his much-awaited comeback to competitive cricket after being sidelined for nearly a year due to injury. Shami will take the field once again, leading Bengal’s pace attack in their upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Madhya Pradesh, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.

Shami’s Comeback to Competitive Cricket

After suffering an ankle injury that forced him to miss cricket, Shami’s journey to rehabilitation has been a long and difficult one. The 34-year-old pacer is still committed to playing the game he loves despite the setback. “It’s been a long road, but I’m excited to be back,” Shami stated. “I’ve missed the game a lot, and now I’m looking forward to being back on the field and giving my best again.”

Before his injury, Shami had been in sensational form, especially during India’s run in the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. He played a pivotal role in India’s progress to the semifinals, taking 24 wickets in seven matches, including a career-defining 7-wicket haul in the semifinal against New Zealand. Unfortunately, just after the World Cup, the injury brought his momentum to a halt, forcing him into a long period of rehabilitation.

“It was tough being away from the game,” Shami admitted. “But staying patient was key, and now I’m focused on getting back to my best. I’m looking forward to proving myself once again.”

Bengal in Ranji Trophy 2024-25

After four matches, Bengal is currently fifth in the Elite Group C points table with eight points and hopes to improve their position in the standings with the return of their star pace bowler.

Bengal head coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla has said, “Having Shami back is a huge boost for us. His experience in high-pressure situations and his consistency with the red ball will make a difference. We’re all looking forward to seeing him back in action and leading the pace attack.”
