 1. Opening Ceremony in Riverside

First time in the history of the Olympic games that the Opening Ceremony would happen outside a stadium.  The Paris Games opening ceremony has been planned to take place at the River Seine which crosses the centre of Paris. Athletes will experience a colorful river parade which will be sailing through the heart of the French Capital City on the opening day.

 2.  Gender Equality

A total of 10,500 athletes are going to participate in this year’s Summer Olympics.  For the first time, exactly half (50%) of the participating athletes will be women.  This marks a significant step towards ensuring gender equality in sports. The previous best was 47.8% in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

 3. Introduction of one sport and new sporting events

In this Olympics, there will be the introduction of one new sport and a lot of new events across various sports. Let us see some of these in detail:

  • Breaking:  Break dancing will feature for the very first time in this Olympics. Competition in this sport will comprise two events – one for men and one for women – where a total of 16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls will go face-to-face in solo battles.

  • Sport Climbing:  Sport climbing is another exciting sport that has made its debut in the Tokyo Olympics, and is about to change its existing format. In Japan, there was one medal in each gender category, which was awarded to the winner of a combined event that saw all the participants competing in speed, bouldering, and lead climbing. At the Paris games, there will be two different medal events for each gender: a combined event that includes only bouldering and lead, and one separate speed climbing event.

  • Kayak Cross Event: While kayak and canoe singles races are already in Olympic sports, the kayak cross race is new, and for the very first time the kayakers will compete against each other instead of the clock.
  • New Sailing Events: In sailing, there will be one change with two new categories going to be introduced at the 2024 Paris Olympics, these are IQ Foil (windsurfing) and formula kite, commonly known as Kite surf.

  • New mixed events: There are quite some new mixed events that we will witness in this Olympics. Some of them are 35the  km walking mixed relay of athletics, the Skeet mixed team event in shooting, and the mixed Dinghy in Sailing.
  • 3×3 basketball will make its return in this year’s summer games will surely bring a lot of excitement among basketball fans.

  • Modern Pentathlon will change its format to last for 90 minutes sharp. The event will be with riding, then followed by the fencing bonus round and swimming, before closing with the laser run combining both shooting and running. There will be breaks of between 5 and 15 minutes in between each discipline.

 5.  Olympic medals made up of iron from the original Eiffel Tower

The 2024 Summer Olympic medals will include one of the most iconic parts of Paris. Each of the Olympic medals Gold, Silver, Bronze will be infused with iron from the original Eiffel Tower which was completed in 1889.

 6.  The Paris Olympics mascot “Phryges” is a Hat

All the previous Olympic mascots have been anything from bears to pandas to tigers, but for the first time in Paris, the official mascot is the “Olympic Phryge“, which was a traditional hat known as “Phrygian Cap” that was once worn by French revolutionaries.
